Bull and Bear

bullbearWent to the Bull and Bear for lunch, so I had a schnitty.

Atmosphere: 5/10 – normal pub still, not overdone and less smokey than it used to be so I don’t choke in there anymore. Lost points though for one of my pet hates when they take a table that should fit 6 and squeeze 8 on to it so you feel like a penguin trying not to clunk elbows as you eat, gave me a stiff back and neck by the end of it. Plus I had the join in the tables in my spot so the plate had to negotiate a 1.5cm height difference between the 2. This meant I had to have the plate off centre to my right making even less room for my carving arm.

Staff: 8/10 – As my fellow reviewer would say, Friendly and professional – no knobs encountered or sighted and the bar chick helped get drinks so the guy taking the orders was quicker, showed some initiative from the bar chick.

Prices: 4/10 – the schnitty cost over $15, which is pretty standard but it’s another one of my pet hates when they charge extra for a basic sauce. Paid $20.90 for the chicken schnitty, mushroom sauce and a pint of coke which feels a bit steep for lunch.

Size: 5/10 – could definitely been bigger, the beef one across from me was a little more my size. Also hated the 2 different fancy lettuce varieties that took up half the plate, literally. There were a few minor pieces of red onion in amongst the forest, then very late in the meal I discovered 1 wedge of tomato (tasteless at that) and a couple of slivers of continental cucumber that were so old the flesh had taken on the dark green colour of the skin. Just as well I don’t eat salad cause that would have p*ssed me off.

Taste: 2/10 – Leg meat, yet another of my pet hates. It’s hard to give a good score to a chicken schnitty when every thrird mouthful has a vein of leg fat in it. It tasted pretty much like one of those processed frozen crumbed deep fried drumsticks you get from a service station roadhouse when you’re starving and you walk in to pay for fuel and there they are, pre-cooked in the hot food bar and you can’t resist, but then you wish you did. Mushroom sauce was pretty standard, but not enough mushrooms as usual these days.

Chips: 7/10 – Nice chips, but agree with my fellow reviewer – no one ever serves enough of them anymore.

Overall rating: 4/10 – OK pub for after work drinks but don’t bother going for lunch.
